A struggling Atlantic fishing village is promised a new factory – but first, the community must come together to charm a doctor into taking up full-time residency there. History of the Festival

The Charlottetown Festival is held each summer at Confederation Centre of the Arts. The Festival has long been home to Anne of Green Gables-The Musical™, which holds the Guinness World Record as the “longest-running annual musical,” having played on our stage every summer from 1965 to 2020 (when it was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic), returning in 2022 and 2024.

Just how did The Charlottetown Festival arrive in such a prominent place in the cultural life of Canada? Like Charlottetown’s improbable place in Canadian history, the existence of the Festival in the capital city of Canada’s smallest province has been both extraordinary and unexpected.
