The Exhibition
In this video installation, Toronto artist Diane Borsato documents a weekly Sunday ritual. Enacted even in the lows of a frigid Toronto winter, a group of mostly Ukrainian Canadians (including many newcomers fleeing the devastating Russian invasion) meets at the West Humber Bay to plunge into Lake Ontario. The weekly meeting demonstrates a shared insistence on living and a resistance to city norms, including warnings from local authorities that the water might be contaminated. Together, the swimmers enact a demand for the environment we all deserve: “a clean place to swim.”
