Join us for a one-of-a-kind workshop for choral music enthusiasts. Secret Chords: Exploring the Theory Behind Iconic Canadian Songs invites singers to explore the art of songwriting and the skills of music reading under the expert guidance of Nick MacDonald, the Centre’s Director of Choral Music.
Participants will delve into the sheet music of cherished Canadian classics, uncovering the intricate craft behind songs by Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, Gordon Lightfoot, and more. This immersive and participatory workshop not only enhances musical literacy but also fosters a deeper appreciation for Canada’s rich musical heritage. Through lively sing-alongs, attendees will put theory into practice in a joyous celebration of music. Don’t miss this opportunity to enrich your musical skills and join a community of fellow music lovers. The workshop is for adults ages 18+.
Through the lens of songcraft and music theory we will explore ways the musical elements of these classic songs enhance the emotional impact of the lyrics — and in turn how the words may have shaped the musical structure to produce such timeless melodies. Throughout the workshop, attendees will be invited to share in group discussions as well as engage in participatory singing and music making.
