Devyani Saltzman announced as senior curatorial advisor of inaugural Charlottetown Forum

July 11, 2023 – Confederation Centre of the Arts is preparing to launch Charlottetown Forum – a national convening event that brings together leaders, artists, and the public to discuss matters of importance to Canadians. 

Following the Symons Medal Presentation and Lecture on November 8, Charlottetown Forum will take place on November 9 and 10 with three interactive panel discussions: Newcomers, Immigration, and the Needs of a Rapidly Changing National Community; Economic Reconciliation; and Shared National Narratives in a Fractured Time.  

The inaugural Forum is presented and curated by Confederation Centre of the Arts, in collaboration with senior curatorial advisor Devyani Saltzman, a Canadian writer, curator, and arts leader with in-depth experience in multidisciplinary programming at the intersection between art, ideas, and social change. She was most recently director of public programming at the Art Gallery of Ontario where she worked to increase engagement amongst broad and diverse audiences to reflect the narratives of all Torontonians.  

Saltzman was previously the director of literary arts at Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, as well as a founding curator at Luminato Festival Toronto. She is a published author, and her work has appeared in The Globe and Mail, The Atlantic, and Tehelka. She is the vice chair of the Writers’ Trust of Canada and President of the Toronto Arts Council. Saltzman has a master’s degree in anthropology and sociology from the University of Oxford and currently consults and programs across the sector.  

“Devyani Saltzman’s established presence in the cultural sector, and her broad scope of experience and knowledge makes her an excellent person for Confederation Centre of the Arts to collaborate with on the inaugural Charlottetown Forum,” says Francesca Perez, the Centre’s director of arts education and heritage. “She has helped us curate an incredible group of leaders in politics, journalism, and art for riveting discussions on social issues in Canada.”  

Speakers and ticketing information for the Forum will be announced Thursday, July 13.
