Anne of Green Gables–The Musical™ to return to The Charlottetown Festival in 2024

– Rights to the show will be available to schools and non-professional community groups in the Maritimes through Concord Theatricals –

November 24, 2022 – Anne of Green Gables–The Musical™ will return to the stage for the 150th birthday of Lucy Maud Montgomery.

Confederation Centre of the Arts is delighted to announce the extension and expansion to its agreement with the show’s rights holders. Starting in 2024, Anne of Green Gables–The Musical™ will be playing on the mainstage every two years (biennially) coinciding with the 150th birthday of Lucy Maud Montgomery. The production ran annually for over fifty years from 1965-2019 and was presented in 2022 after a brief hiatus due to COVID-related challenges.

The rights to the Charlottetown Festival adaptation of Anne of Green Gables–The Musical™ have previously been available throughout North America and now will be made available to schools and non-professional community groups for the first time in the Maritimes, through Concord Theatricals.

This new agreement will also bring the musical to other markets when not presented at the Festival, with beautifully imagined touring sets developed under Adam Brazier’s guidance.

“We are thrilled to announce that the Centre and rights holders have come to a new agreement that builds on our longstanding partnership,” says Centre CEO Steve Bellamy. “The story of Anne is an integral part of Prince Edward Island culture, and we want to assure the public that it will return to the stage for years to come.”

Anne of Green Gables–The Musical™ has played on international stages including New York, London, Tokyo, Sweden, toured Canada numerous times as well as performed by stock and amateur theatres across USA and Canada.

“Anne of Green Gables–The Musical™ is an indispensable part of our programming,” says Adam Brazier, artistic director of performing arts at the Centre. “This musical is an adored and fundamental part of the Centre’s history, and we look forward to continuing its legacy in 2024 and beyond.”

“The pandemic gave us the chance to imagine how we can share the magic of Anne and Avonlea,” says Kelley Harron, daughter of the musical’s co-creator Don Harron. “Making the musical more accessible will help inspire a new generation of theatre performers and patrons,”

Confederation Centre of the Arts plans to announce its lineup of shows for The 2023 Charlottetown Festival on Thursday, December 1.
