The Maud returns with exclusive performances from The Charlottetown Festival company

August 1, 2024 – The long-running variety concert from The Charlottetown Festival company returns on Sunday, August 25 with exclusive one-night-only performances.

Back for its 44th edition, The Maud (Maud Whitmore Variety Concert) is a beloved event known for its wide range of acts – from music to dance to comedic interludes – from members of The Charlottetown Festival company and Confederation Centre of the Arts staff.

This year’s edition will be hosted by Marlene Handrahan and Laurie Murdoch, who are playing Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert in Anne of Green Gables–The Musical™.

“I’m delighted to be part of this cherished tradition,” says Handrahan. “The Maud gives performers a chance to showcase other sides of their repertoire, which makes for a memorable show full of surprises.”

Murdoch adds, “The Maud also is an important fundraiser and a chance for our artists and the community to help encourage the development of Canadian theatre talent. Audiences can expect unique performances from some of their Festival favourites.”

Acts will include dancing from the ensemble of Anne of Green Gables–The Musical™, performances from members of the Festival orchestra, and a sneak peek of a new Canadian musical being workshopped at the Centre – Kitsault by Douglas Price and Carl Pucl.

The Maud raises money for the Maud Whitmore Scholarship Fund at The Charlottetown Festival. These scholarships help theatre artists, both emerging and established, pursue professional training in a variety of disciplines – including music, dance, technical production, stage management, and more.

This event is named after the late Maud Whitmore, a veteran Canadian actor who endeared herself to Festival audiences from 1965-77 as Rachel Lynde in Anne of Green Gables–The Musical™. Her years of commanding performances inspired many to pursue careers in musical theatre.

The Maud will take place on Sunday, August 25 at 7:30 p.m. at the Sobey Family Theatre at Confederation Centre of the Arts. Tickets are on sale now to Centre members, and to the public on Friday, August 2.
