The Exhibition
This exhibition of 19th century Canadian painting has been arranged to support students taking 19th Century Art History at the University of Prince Edward Island. Many Canadian artists of the 1800s, including George Thresher, Paul Peel, and Robert Harris, represented here, were trained in Europe. They responded to the landscape and cultures of what was to become Canada, but also to the rapid transformations taking place in European art at the time, prompted by cultural and political revolution, the invention of photography, the acceleration of industry and the expansion of the empire, and the arrival of a mass audience for images.
