August 15, 2024 – Vive l’Acadie! Confederation Centre of the Arts marked National Acadian Day by flying the Acadian flag on its Lou MacEachern Plaza. An official flag-raising ceremony was held today to add the Acadian flag as a permanent fixture outside the Centre alongside the Canadian flag, provincial and territorial flags, and the Mi’kmaq flag.
“National Acadian Day is an important opportunity to celebrate Canada’s rich and vibrant Acadian culture. Confederation Centre of the Arts has proudly showcased and celebrated Acadian stories that have helped shape the country – from staging the world premiere musical Evangeline, to sharing Acadian history on historic walking tours, to awarding novelist Antonine Maillet with the Symons Medal, or hosting performances by artists like Barachois, Lennie Gallant, and Vishtèn,” says Centre CEO Steve Bellamy.
He adds, “Flying the Acadian flag is a way for Confederation Centre of the Arts to permanently recognize the important role of Acadians in Canadian identity, culture, and community. Bonne fête nationale de l’Acadie!”
“As the main voice of the Acadian and francophone community, SAF’Île would like to applaud the initiative of Confederation Centre of the Arts to permanently fly the Acadian flag, an important symbol of the heritage and vitality of Acadie,” says Charles Duguay, president of the Société acadienne et francophone de l’Île-du-Prince-Édouard. “This concrete gesture marks the official recognition of the richness and added value of Acadian history, and we are delighted with it.”
