Charlottetown, PEI — The Confederation Centre is proud to announce the naming of the Palmer Canadian Leadership Institute, made possible through a transformative $1 million gift from the Palmer Family Foundation in support of the Centre’s Shared Voices Campaign. The gift honours the legacy of the late James (Jim) Palmer, a respected lawyer, civic leader, and lifelong champion of public policy, national unity, and Canadian institutions.

The Palmer Canadian Leadership Institute will support leadership development rooted in dialogue and civic responsibility, reflecting both the Confederation Centre’s national mandate and the values that guided Jim Palmer throughout his life. Through programming and national engagement, the Institute will also bring leaders and the public together to learn from one another about important issues that shape Canada.

“Jim Palmer believed deeply in the responsibilities of leadership and in the importance of strong Canadian institutions,” said Steve Bellamy, CEO of the Confederation Centre of the Arts. “This remarkable gift ensures his values will continue to inspire future generations. The Palmer Canadian Leadership Institute brings leaders together with the public to address important issues that help strengthen Canadian confederation.”

Originally from Prince Edward Island, Jim Palmer’s family roots stretch back to Confederation itself, including ancestors who served as premiers, judges, and a Father of Confederation. A fifth-generation lawyer, Palmer built a successful legal and business career in Calgary while maintaining a lifelong interest in public service, education, the arts, and philanthropy. He believed leadership required not only professional excellence, but also empathy, respect for others, and a commitment to giving back.

We are honoured to continue our father’s legacy with a gift to the Palmer Canadian Leadership institute,” said the Palmer Family. “Our parents, Jim and Barbara Palmer, spent their lives giving back to community, both deeply understanding the importance of getting involved. Jim felt it was especially vital to bring people together from across the country to discuss pertinent issues that affect all our lives. In this way new ideas are formed, and we become more aware of our community’s needs and interests to continue working towards a caring, vibrant and just society.”

Programming for the Palmer Canadian Leadership Institute will include the Confederation Centre’s Symons Medal Presentation and Lecture, the Charlottetown Forum, and a range of other forums, conferences, and events that bring industry leaders and decision makers together with the public to address important issues of public policy and Canadian confederation.
