A Life’s Work: Canadian Artist Robert Harris (1849-1919)

Robert Harris, Self-Portrait (Profile with Boiler Hat), 1908, oil on panel. Gift of Mary Beth Harris, 2010, CAGH-9043
This survey of Harris’ impressive career as a portrait painter in a young country includes his commissioned and family portraits, self-portraits, genre subjects, as well as less known, but remarkable landscapes and selected drawings, sketchbooks, family photographs, letters, and memorabilia. Ranging from youthful works made in Charlottetown, to those created during his international studies or travels or in his Montreal studio, this selection of works is drawn primarily from the our extensive Robert Harris Collection and Archive, together with a small number of loans from public and private collections.
