For Rob and Jean, supporting the Shared Voices Campaign at Confederation Centre of the Arts is about honouring a legacy of creativity and community that spans generations. Both Rob and Jean grew up in homes where the arts were deeply valued. Their parents were not only patrons, but active supporters of music, theatre, and cultural life.

Rob’s first memory of Confederation Centre dates back to 1968, when he attended the Charlottetown Festival with his mother, a passionate lover of music and theatre. “I’ll be honest,” he laughs, “I really didn’t want to be there at the time. She dragged me. Looking back, it left more of an impression than I realized.”

That early experience came full circle as Rob and Jean returned to the Centre time and again, not just as audience members, but as proud parents and engaged supporters of the Island’s cultural community.

Their son Scott, now a professional musician with the Orchestre Symphonique de Québec, began his musical journey through the UPEI Wind Symphony and the PEI Symphony. Jean, a devoted advocate for classical music, served as president of the PEI Symphony and saw firsthand the deep partnership between the Symphony and the Centre.

“Scott’s connections in the music world cemented our connection to the Centre,” Jean reflects. “We saw how vital that space is, not just for showcasing talent, but for nurturing it.”

Jean’s connection to the Centre goes back to before she even lived on the Island. Growing up in the Montreal area, she remembers her father returning from a business trip in 1964 with a leather portfolio embossed with the name of the newly opened Confederation Centre of the Arts.

“It was a very impressive item in our household,” Jean laughs. “I never imagined that one day I’d live here and be so closely connected to the Centre myself.”

Now, as supporters of the Shared Voices Campaign, Rob and Jean are excited about what the future holds. They’re particularly inspired by the Centre’s vision of becoming an Arts Innovation Hub, a place that produces more original theatrical works, while an expanded Arts Academy reaches and develops more young talent across the province and the country.

“It’s about building the future,” says Rob. “We’ve seen what the Centre can do for young artists, our own children included. Supporting this campaign means opening those doors even wider.”

For Rob and Jean, Confederation Centre of the Arts is more than a landmark. It’s a place where past and future meet, where stories are shared across generations, and where the transformative power of the arts continues to thrive.
