A collaboration between the Centre and the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, ArtsSmarts supports a creative learning process where artists are selected to join teachers in integrating arts activities into non-arts subject areas. For instance, this year, Island artist Betty-Jo McCarville joined Stratford Elementary school teacher, Mme. Diana Tutty. Together they taught a Grade 6 Health curriculum through the creation of inspiring visual posters related to drug abuse, fitness, self-esteem, and more, all while learning graphic design, lino-cut printmaking, typography, painting and more. A student participating in this program was heard saying, “If I had ArtsSmarts every day, I would want to come to school in the summer.”
Participating students from kindergarten to senior high from nine different schools from across the Island took part and their work will be on display at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery. Please join us for an opening reception on Monday, May 12 at 7 p.m.
