Greer View Mirror

Take Some Respondability, 1974, epoxy clay, steel spoons, paper Courtesy of the artist
A selection of witty sculptural works from 1972 to 1990 by the Nova Scotia-based artist John Greer, all shown at the Isaacs Gallery in Toronto.

This exhibition presents an overview of Nova Scotia artist John Greer’s work exhibited at Toronto’s Isaacs Gallery during the 1970s and 1980s. At the time, the gallery’s roster included many of Canada’s most internationally-known artists, including Michael Snow, Greg Curnoe, Gathie Falk, Joyce Wieland, William Kurelek, and Jack Chambers. Greer was known during the period for mixed media works that combined dry humour, an interest in viewer engagement, and philosophical inquiry. Sometimes his deadpan use of lowbrow puns and clichés challenged critics comfortable only with the high seriousness of art discourse in the heyday of modernism and conceptual art. Even as his career has since turned to monumental sculpture, John Greer has continued to bring lightness and verbal agility to the weighty materials of marble, cast iron, granite, and bronze. The interplay between gravity and imagination, evident here, animates his work to this day.

What are Relaxed Performances?

Sometimes referred to as sensory-friendly experiences, Relaxed Performances give the opportunity for those with various sensitivities towards sensory stimuli to experience and enjoy live theatre.

These performances will be designed in a way to be more comfortable for audience members who may experience anxiety or are not comfortable with some aspects of a traditional theatre setting. This can include people on the Autism Spectrum and their families; those with sensory and communicative disorders or learning disabilities; people with Tourette’s syndrome; someone who might need to move often due to chronic pain or to use the facilities; or even parents with toddlers.

Relaxed Performances offered during the 2021 Charlottetown Festival:
  • I agree to receive further communications from Confederation Centre of the Arts for upcoming events, promotions and market research purposes.
