Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash announces cast selection

May 25, 2012

Anticipation high for Charlottetown Festival production as June 22 opening night approaches

Charlottetown - A hit cast of over 30 stellar artists guide you on a musical journey touching on the life and times of one of the world's most influential musical artists. Drawing from a deep library of songs, Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash is not a biography but a tribute to ‘The Man in Black' with stories of tragedy, life and love. This epic musical revue launches June 22 on The Homburg Theatre stage of Confederation Centre of the Arts. "Our artistic team has surpassed expectations of the Centre's interpretation of the story of Johnny Cash,'" says Jessie Inman, CEO of Confederation Centre of the Arts. "The talent we have aligned to translate the Cash experience is some of the best in North America, the set is breathtaking and the performance promises to be one of the best productions Confederation Centre of the Arts has ever staged."

Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash will feature over 30 male and female singers, dancers and musicians. A lead ensemble of eight performers will guide you on a journey through Johnny Cash's storied life and celebrated canon of music, from the cotton fields of Arkansas to the Grand Ole Opry.

These featured performers include Festival favourites Kristen Peace (Anne of Green Gables, Canada Rocks, Disco Cirque), Ben Kunder (Ritchie Valens in Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story), and Charlottetown's Julain Molnar (The Full Monty, The Sound of Music, Stan Rogers: A Matter of Heart). Musical Director is Craig Fair, himself a seven year veteran of the Charlottetown Festival (British Invasion, The Full Monty). Other featured soloists include; Cameron MacDuffee, Justin Stadnyk, Alicia Toner and Lisa Kisch.

Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash will feature three dozen of Johnny Cash's hit songs, which describe the journey of a man in search of his soul. Although primarily remembered as a country music artist, Cash's style spanned from gospel to folk, rock to blues, and country in between. From straight-up standards such as "I Walk the Line", "Get Rhythm", and the sassy duet "Jackson", to the wryly ironic "I've Been Flushed from the Bathroom of Your Heart", audiences will gain an appreciation for the complicated and often contradictory singer-songwriter.

"It takes a special range of artists to effectively portray the journey Cash took throughout his musical career," says Anne Allan, Artistic Director of The Charlottetown Festival. "We feel blessed to present this terrific selection of performers as part of this newest offering of the Charlottetown Festival."

Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash will celebrate its Grand Opening premiere on Friday, June 22. This fantastic new musical will be unveiled to the public and a ‘Nashville-style' reception throughout the Confederation Centre of the Arts will follow, which is open to all ticket holders for that evening's performance.
