ArtsSmarts

May 14 - May 27

The annual ArtsSmarts exhibition showcases the work of over 600 students from eight different Island schools.

The annual ArtsSmarts exhibition is a celebration of student artwork from the 2011-12 ArtsSmarts projects of eastern P.E.I. Showcasing the work of over 600 students from eight different Island schools, this show will range in media from painting, sculpture and wearable art to video work and more. Schools included in this year's show are Stratford, Glen Stewart, Sherwood, Prince Street, La-Belle-Cloche, François-Buote, Eliot River and Queen Charlotte.
Through the ArtsSmarts program, Island artists work with teachers and students on projects that integrate art making into all school subject areas. Students combine their learning of core subjects such as math and languages with the help of visual and literary arts, dance, music and/or theatre.

At Glen Stewart Primary, 15 young French immersion kindergarten students worked with Island artist Lynn Gaudet to make paintings of animals native to Prince Edward Island during the winter. Students first learned painting techniques and then authored a short text to accompany their artwork. A book is being compiled of these images and texts to be used as a teaching resource for future immersion kindergarten classes.

At Queen Charlotte Intermediate, 70 Grade 8 students worked on a special Parks Canada partner project to demonstrate the past, present and future of P.E.I.'s ecosystem.

The opening reception will take place Monday, May 14, at 7 p.m. and the public is invited.
